Grunge Included 2026 International Grunge Conference in York
The Grunge Included Conference 2026 invites music writers, scholars, students, researchers, musicians, critics and cultural commentators to submit abstracts for presentations exploring the multifaceted legacy of grunge music and culture. This multidisciplinary conference aims to examine the evolution, context and continuing impact of the grunge movement from its origins in the Pacific Northwest to its lingering influence in global music and culture today. We welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplines, including (but not limited to) musicology, music, ethnomusicology, sociology, fashion studies, history, political science, media studies, graphic design and cultural studies. Whether you're dissecting the distortion pedals of Mudhoney or tracing the lineage from Cobain to contemporary alt-pop, we want to hear Your voice.
Grunge Included 2026 is an international conference dedicated to exploring the history, culture, politics and lasting influence of grunge. Taking place in York, UK, on 7 September 2026, the conference brings together academics, researchers, writers and creative voices to examine grunge music and culture from a wide range of perspectives. Founded by Kristīne and Sintija Brence, Grunge Included creates a space for new research and discussion around one of the most influential alternative music and cultural movements of the late twentieth century. Grunge Included 2026 will explore the music, politics, fashion, visual culture, feminism, identity and social movements connected to grunge, while also considering how grunge continues to influence contemporary culture.
The conference will feature Sintija Brence, who will explore the relationship between alternative music and American politics in Silencing The Alternative America: Parents Music Resource Centre and Grunge Politics. The talk examines the Parents Music Resource Center and the political environment surrounding alternative music in the United States.
Klaudia Rachubińska will focus on Courtney Love and feminism, exploring the contradictions and complexities surrounding Love's public image, feminist identity and position within the grunge movement.
The music and political legacy of Nirvana will be examined by James How, whose paper explores violence, authenticity and protest in the making of Nirvana's landmark album Nevermind. John Moores will consider another important aspect of Nirvana and the wider Seattle scene by examining humour and satire in Nirvana and Mudhoney.
Grunge's distinctive visual identity will be explored by Kristīne Brence in a discussion of Art Chantry, grunge design and American political culture, examining the relationship between graphic design, music and politics within the grunge movement.
The conference will also look beyond the United States. Michael Ayokunle Osagie will explore connections between grunge, Afrobeat and protest music in Africa in Voices of Resistance: From Grunge to Afrobeat and the Politics of Protest Music in Africa. The paper considers how music can become a powerful form of cultural and political resistance across different places and musical traditions.
The influence of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest music scene will be explored by Amy McCarthy, who examines the writing of Carrie Brownstein and Kathleen Hanna and the ways in which Seattle has been represented, remembered and reimagined through their work.
A special feature of Grunge Included 2026 will be an in conversation event with Gordon Raphael. A Seattle native and acclaimed record producer, Gordon Raphael is best known for producing The Strokes' groundbreaking debut EP The Modern Age and their landmark albums Is This It and Room on Fire. His work helped define the sound of the 2000s garage rock revival. Gordon Raphael will join Grunge Included for a live conversation and audience Q&A.
The conference will also explore the continuing influence of grunge on later generations. Zana Bayley will examine grunge, neurodivergent difference and alternative music as a teenage refuge, considering the ways alternative music can provide a sense of identity, community and belonging.
Grace Elizabeth Emerson will explore the relationship between grunge and 2010s internet culture in The Tumblr Generation: How 2010 Emo Culture Reimagined Grunge. The talk considers how a new generation discovered, interpreted and transformed the visual and cultural language of grunge through Tumblr and emo culture.
Fashion is another major part of the grunge legacy. Joi Katskee will explore the enduring relationship between grunge fashion and popular culture in Live Through This: Comparing Coco Chanel to Cobain's Cardigan: Why Grunge Fashion Will Always Be in Style.
Grunge Included 2026 will bring together these different perspectives to consider why grunge still matters. More than a musical genre, grunge became a cultural language through which artists and audiences explored authenticity, rebellion, politics, gender, identity, fashion, creativity and resistance.
From Nirvana and Mudhoney to Courtney Love and the wider Seattle music scene, the conference will examine both the history of grunge and its continuing impact on contemporary music and culture. It will also consider how grunge has travelled beyond its original geographical and musical boundaries, influencing new generations, new communities and new forms of alternative expression.
